In Milan, a Treasure Made of Fabrics<\/em><\/p>\n

Milan, Via Ges\u00f9 1, in the heart of the fashion district. Luca Rubinacci, scion of the Neapolitan family that has made haute tailoring a religion, awaits us there, in what appears to be more of a luxury residence than a showroom. Ice-blue eyes, impeccable style, and a slight, almost imperceptible Neapolitan accent, he guides us through fabrics and history, recounting how the renowned Rubinacci tailoring house was born. <\/p>\n

A long conversation, interrupted only by the arrival of a client who needed to try on his suit. “Would you mind waiting just a moment? My client has arrived.” This surprises us. “Do you personally conduct the fittings?” “Certainly, I assist them through every phase of the garment’s creation.” When he returns, he explains how essential it is for him to follow the client, understand them, listen to them, and pamper them. “This, in my view, is luxury.” The conversation continues, touching the fabrics, observing the dye baths and vintage prints up close, Luca’s enthusiasm in recounting, being captivated by the fitting room that is not a simple changing area but a comfortable space where one can relax and feel at home while measurements are taken and necessary adjustments are made to ensure the garment is perfect, and culminates in the small adjoining atelier, where four tailors work slowly and patiently. <\/p>\n

Luca, tell us more about the history of the Rubinacci tailoring house\u2026
\nWe are a Neapolitan tailoring house spanning three generations. My grandfather, Gennaro, began in 1932, then my father Mariano continued and made it famous throughout Italy. Now I am working to expand it worldwide. We are renowned for our Neapolitan jacket, which has a very soft structure, although my influence\u2014I studied with English tailors\u2014has added a touch of modernity. Today we are able to create a more structured jacket without forgetting the light Neapolitan construction. An English jacket with Neapolitan softness. We are bespoke designers, the only ones who dress the client’s style. In the past, one went to the tailor to follow the tailor’s style; today we go to the client to follow the client’s style. We have forty tailors between Milan and Naples, and a few years ago, the Financial Times gave us the title of largest tailoring house in Europe. <\/p>\n

Do you dress only men or women as well?
\nWe primarily dress men, but given that androgynous style has been very much in vogue in recent years\u2014menswear for women\u2014we also receive many requests for suits, jackets, and coats from women who seek haute tailoring, because the distinctive feature of a bespoke garment is that it is modeled exactly on the client’s body. And our clients are very discerning. Where in the world do your clients come from? Our clients today come from all over the world because, as my father says, “we have already dressed most of the Italians,” although we continue to have a good 20% Italian clientele. <\/p>\n

What are the reasons for this great and acclaimed success?
\nWe guarantee the bespoke suit for life: it can be taken in, let out, altered\u2014this means that the wardrobe grows rather than changes. The beauty of having a bespoke garment is that it is eternal. Perhaps for a few seasons it may go out of fashion, but then it returns and is always beautiful, because it is well made, with durable, high-quality materials. <\/p>\n

Where do your fabrics come from?
\nWe have 60,000 meters of fabric in house, which means we possess an extensive collection of fabrics, including vintage pieces from the 1930s, 1940s, and so on, of which only the last cuts remain. We source from the finest fabric suppliers in the world, both Italian and international; the important thing is that they contain no acrylic, so they can be worked by hand. No tailoring house has such an extensive stock of fabrics as ours: we have a treasure made of fabrics. <\/p>\n
